Letptospirosis is an infectious disease caused by a microscopic organism called
a Spirochete. The disease is spread through the infected animals urine. The
urine contains the Leptospirosis, which contaminates the water and food of
other animals.
One of the main sources of the spread of Leptospirosis is through the rodent
population, rats and others.
Humans can contract Leptospirosis, but don't be too concerned, dogs are not a
likely source in the case of humans contracting the disease. If you do know
that your dog is infected be extra careful when cleaning up after a dog, wear
rubber gloves and other protective gear as may be necessary in the
circumstances.
Different types of Leptospirosis exist and symptoms vary with the type of
infection.
Symptoms may include: listlessness, appetite loss, fever, yellowing of the
whites of the eyes and gums (jaundice). The kidneys and muscles are most at
risk from Leptospirosis, which can be seen, in the painful walk of the infected dog.
Severe cases bring diarrhoea, mouth ulcers, vomiting and can cause death.
Prevention through vaccination is the best defence.
If you suspect that your dog may have contracted Leptospirosis, see a vet
immediately. Treatment normally consists of a penicillin antibiotic or
streptomycin.
Please note the above symptoms, do not necessarily point to Leptospirosis, as
these symptoms can occur in other conditions. However if your dog shows any of
the above symptoms, please do not hesitate to consult a vet immediately.
Help your dog from contracting this dreadful disease by making sure your dog
has timely vaccinations against Leptospirosis.
