When two dogs meet it's normal for them to sniff at each others private
regions. This is simply a normal meeting pattern for dogs.Unfortunately dogs tend to apply this ritual when meeting humans as well. This
of course can be rather embarrassing for the dog's owner as well as the
visitor. However please bear in mind that your dog is exhibiting normal
behaviour.
Some dogs however seem much worse than others. Duke my German Shepherd was one
such dog. He almost without fail would stick his nose between any newcomer's
legs. He was a wonderful dog, but unfortunately spent the first 9 months of his
life in kennels. He therefore did not have the required human contact and was
kept very much on his own until we rescued him from his fate.
It would seem that dogs that have had limited or no human contact and have
mainly only had other dogs as company show a tendency to stick their noses
between people's legs much more than dogs that have been properly socialised.
This behavioural problem can be cured or at least significantly reduced, but it
does require the assistance of a visitor or two.
Before showing you dog into the company of the new visitors explain the problem
to them. Give them a spray deterrent that you have previously purchased or
simply arm them with a water spray bottle or even your son's water pistol.
Ask your visitors to direct a spray into your dog's face should he attempt to
stick his nose between their legs.
If your dog has mastered the basics of obedience training, then command him to
sit when a situation arises that you feel will result in him smelling private
regions of your guests. Of course always reward your dog for good behaviour
such as sitting.
You should find that after a few sessions such as that outlined above should
solve the problem.
I recommend a great ebook dealing with dog behavioural problems which also provides a very effective dog training method. For more information, Please Click Here!
